Shan Riggs, Chicago Medals4Mettle coordinator and Ultra-marathoner runs 195 miles non-stop from Chicago to Indianapolis to deliver special medal to Riley patient and raise money for Medals 4 Mettle and Riley Children's Hospital!

The Medals4Mettle “Windy 2 Indy” Run on Saturday, June 21 was 29 year old Shan Riggs’ 51-hour journey to encourage a Riley patient, honor his late grandfather, support a Medals 4 Mettle and to retrace significant steps in his own life.

Noblesville native and ultra-marathon runner Shan Riggs left his current residence in Chicago and set out on a 195-mile journey back home to deliver a special, customized medal to a Riley patient at the Clarian North Medical Center. He ran almost non-stop for two days and arrived at the hospital late Monday morning, June 23. Riggs embarked on this long journey to encourage a patient at Riley Hospital for Children, to honor the memory of his late grandfather, to retrace significant steps in his own life and to raise money for Medals4Mettle and Riley Children's Hospital. The run was sponsored by Clarian Health and Riley Hospital for Children.

The Windy 2 Indy Run raised money for Medals 4 Mettle and Riley Children's Hospital.

In its brief history, Medals4Mettle has grown into an international network of physicians that have collected over 3,500 medals donated by marathon runners and athletes from across the country. Medals4Mettle has been endorsed by numerous organizations and has been featured as an official charity in some of the nation’s largest and most prestigious marathons.

Welcome

Medals4Mettle (M4M) is a non-profit organization founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2005. Its mission is to celebrate and reward the individual and collective courage of all human beings by facilitating the gifting of marathon finisher’s medals from marathoners to people who have demonstrated similar mettle, or courage. The recipients can be any age and might have exhibited such mettle by dealing with disease, handicaps or any similar challenge. Marathon runners around the world, and others who have won medals, give their medals to Medals4Mettle. Then our nationwide network of physicians and others award these medals to those who might not be able to run a marathon, but are in their own marathon to continue to live their life. As marathoners run through the streets, large crowds cheer the runners for their effort. Medals4Mettle lets these runners, healthy enough to compete in such an event, to return the cheers to those who have supported them.

Since our inception, we have experienced phenomenal growth! M4M has established itself as an international organization that is held in the highest regard by accomplishing the following:

  • Establishing a Board of Directors comprised of highly respected and talented individuals.
  • Organizing a network of physicians to deliver the medals to sick patients and other deserving recipients.
  • Obtaining financial and implementation support from international, national and local businesses and organizations.
  • Working closely with marathons and mini-marathons and other events to collect donated medals for M4M.
  • Networking and cooperating with other non-profit organizations with missions similar to M4M.
  • Developing a workable plan that has permitted marathoners and other medal winners to gift their finisher medals to others who deserve similar acknowledgement. M4M removes the ribbon from the medal, and replaces it with a branded M4M ribbon.
  • Providing efficient, quality service to all who choose to associate with M4M.

Future Plans:

  • Work with marathons to arrange a meaningful way to distribute unused medals.
  • Arrange the gifting of unused marathon T-shirts to deserving recipients.
  • Fund raising for charitable organizations and research support.
